How to choose the right card

  1. Match the card to your biggest spend. Look at last month's statement — if most of it is online shopping, pick a cashback/shopping card; if it's bills, pick a bills card.
  2. Check the fee and the waiver. Many "paid" cards become effectively free once you cross an annual spend target. A lifetime-free card removes that worry entirely.
  3. Be realistic about eligibility. Banks approve based on income, city and credit score. Applying for a card you're unlikely to qualify for just adds a rejection to your record — start with one that fits your profile.
  4. Don't over-collect. One or two well-matched cards beat five you barely use. More cards mean more due dates and more chance of a missed payment.
💡 Use it right: a credit card only saves you money if you pay the full statement balance every month. Carry a balance and interest (often 35–45% a year) will dwarf any cashback. Paid in full and on time, a card is a free layer of rewards and protection on spending you'd do anyway.

Credit card FAQs

Which credit card is best for beginners in India?

If you're new to credit, start with a simple low- or no-fee card you're likely to be approved for — a flat-cashback card like SBI Cashback, or a lifetime-free card. Use it for regular spends and pay the full bill every month to build your credit score.

Does applying for a credit card lower my credit score?

Each application triggers a "hard enquiry" that can dip your score by a few points temporarily. One or two applications are fine; applying for many cards in a short time hurts more. Space out applications and only apply for cards you're eligible for.

What's the difference between cashback and reward points?

Cashback is credited as money (or a statement credit) you can use anywhere. Reward points must be redeemed through the bank's catalogue or partners, and their value varies. Cashback is simpler; points can be worth more if you redeem them well.

Will I be charged interest if I pay my bill on time?

No. If you pay the full statement balance by the due date, you pay zero interest on purchases. Interest (often 35–45% a year) only applies if you carry a balance or pay just the minimum — which wipes out any rewards.

Can I get a credit card if I'm self-employed or have no salary slip?

Yes. Self-employed applicants can qualify using ITR, bank statements or business income proof. If you don't qualify for a regular card, a secured card against a fixed deposit is an easy way to start and build your score.
